Seeking Volunteers for CT Trees of Honor Memorial

Your time and generosity are needed to help maintain this beautiful memorial in Veterans Memorial Park, Middletown. A flowering tree and granite monument honors our state’s fallen service men and women who sacrificed their lives. The memorial was built four years ago and relies on dedicated volunteers to help maintain it from April through October. Help is needed to weed under trees and in flower gardens; clip spent rose blossoms; add mulch; sweep walkway and plazas; and water newer trees. No experience needed — as little or as much time as you can give. Bring: kneeling pad, weeding tools, water bottle, boots, sunscreen, bug spray, bag/box for weeds collection. Restroom facilities in the park. Contact Sue Martucci, 860-841-4287, suemartucci@gmail.com.

Black History Month

Celebrate Black Heritage Month with the Wadsworth Atheneum at a free preview screening of “The Green Book: Guide to Freedom,” a new documentary on Victor Green and his Green Book travel guide. The Negro Motorist Green Book helped African Americans navigate safe passage across America well into the 1960s. Explore some of the segregated nation's safe havens and notorious “sundown towns” and witness stories of struggle and indignity as well as opportunity and triumph. The screening is Tuesday, February 12, 6 to 8 p.m. Read more and Register
