NAVIGATORS BASKETBALL

November 23
Turkey Slam Invitational Basketball Tournament
American International College
UPDATE
The Navigators Men’s squad had a strong showing in last weekend’s first warm-up for the Northeast Regional NIRSA Tournament, to be held at Boston University in late January.
Their first opponent would be tournament host American International College. The Navs took the lead early and never looked back, cruising to a 51-39 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
In the second round, the opponent was a much larger and more physical Southern New Hampshire State University. The Penmen couldn’t match both the offensive and defensive speed of the Navs, and were ultimately dispatched 52-37
The third round saw the Navs playing Assumption College, a team that qualified for the Elite Eight in last year’s NIRSA Regional Tournament. Defense reigned supreme again, as Goodwin shut down the Pacer’s inside game, and handily defeated them 63-47.
Onto the finals, where the two undefeated teams would meet; the Pride of Springfield College and the Navigators of Goodwin College. The Pride jumped out to an early 9 point advantage; the first time the Navigators trailed all day, but by midway through the first half, it was a one possession game. Tied at 53 with under a minute left in regulation, the Pride were able to get a timeout called while their player fell to the floor trying to advance against a solid Nav’s press. After the whistle, Springfield inbounded the ball, and with 7 seconds left on the game clock, drove the lane and threw up a one-handed runner. It kissed off the glass and dropped in for the game winner as time expired. Final score, Springfield College Pride 55, Goodwin College Navigators 53.
A tough loss, but an outstanding showing by the Navs.
Next up, a rematch at AIC against the Yellow Jackets.
Date and time TBD.

Go NAVS!

UPDATE – NIRSA Indoor Soccer Tournament

NOVEMBER 9

The first annual Goodwin-hosted Indoor Region One Soccer Tournament was held this past weekend at the Oakwood Soccer Center in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Colleges from Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut competed in a round-robin formatted playoff, culminating with the Lord Jeffs of Amherst College taking the crown.

While in the semi-finals, the Navs of Goodwin College had a 2-1 lead on Amherst with just under 3 minutes to play. Some timely passing and a quirky bounce or two netted a pair of goals for the tenacious Jeffs, in what was easily the match of the day.

Other thrillers on the pitch included SUNY New Paltz and Sacred Heart University playing to a 1-1 tie, while in a second-round contest, Fabian Brooks scored on a penalty shot as time expired to give the Navigators a 5-4 win over Sacred Heart.

Coming soon: Look for the Navs on the pitch in a Staff/Student game!
